How do I know if I need to replace my Double Glazing?

Even good quality glazing doesn’t last forever; quality of materials, installation, where the windows are situated and local weather can all impact their useful lifespan. Double glazing technology has also improved over recent years: it’s worth investing in state-of-the-art windows if you want to improve the energy efficiency of your home. But how will you know if it’s time to replace your windows? Look out for these telltale signs:
Windows have condensation
If condensation between the panes is making it difficult to see through your windows, this is a sign that the double glazing unit has broken down. Unfortunately, the condensation will only get worse over time. Eventually, energy-saving properties will deteriorate to that of a single glazed window.
Window frames are yellowing
First generation PVCu windows of old were vulnerable to yellowing over time; however, manufacturing developments, including new additives to the PVCu, means this is no longer a problem in new windows.

Windows aren't soundproofing your home
If you can hear passing traffic or noise from your neighbours when you're inside your house with the windows shut, this indicates your windows are no longer fitting correctly and may need replacing. Modern windows can make your home a peaceful place to be, significantly improving your quality of life.
Window frames are rotting
Without careful maintenance, wooden framed windows can rot, decay and suffer insect damage over time. If you've inherited a poorly maintained property, or just don't have time to commit to routine work, gaps can form in the wood, causing leaks and drafts. These are a sure sign of deterioration and windows must be treated or replaced immediately as their performance will only worsen over time.
Windows don't open or close properly
Wooden frames can warp and become difficult to open and close over time. Likewise, old uPVC windows with poor quality or ill-maintained hinges can get jammed. This is not only irritating when you want to let in fresh air, but also dangerous should you have an emergency and need to escape. Furthermore, if windows don’t open or close properly, it's likely they're not secure and pose a security risk.

Windows are letting in a draft
PVCu windows have come a long way since the first-generation designs of the 1980s when energy efficiency was much lower.  If you're noticing draft in your home, this is a sure sign that old weather seals have deteriorated, meaning windows need replacing.
If you feel that your windows are showing signs of ageing give us a call. We can come and take a look, tell you if we think they need replacing and give you a no-obligation quote.

Bespoke window designs
Everybody’s different: from our finger-prints and dress-sense, to our sense of humor and taste in music. Equally, even houses that are built to look identical have the potential to become unique - especially when given the CRK treatment!
At CRK there’s no such thing as one-size-fits all. Of course, some companies who buy their windows off-shelf won’t have the flexibility to adapt their designs to individual customers’ needs but with CRK the opposite is true. For us, every glazing project is as individual as the customer.
For 40 years we’ve designed, manufactured and installed all our windows in-house. This means that when you choose CRK you choose flexibility, creativity and no limits; whether that’s a round, oval, diamond or even star shaped window. Oh, and if you’ve snapped an unusual shaped-window out-and-about or on Pinterest, show us. We love a challenge!

So, what about colour? We have a choice of 20 standard colours for the frames or if you really want to get creative you can choose from a rainbow of thousands of bespoke shades.

Frame sorted? The choice doesn’t stop there! With CRK you have the option to tailor your glass too. Renovating a 1930/20s house? Why not consider leaded lights? Georgian bars bring out the best in period properties, or if you want something really special, we highly recommend our new Brilliant Cut windows which are engraved inside the cavity of the sealed doubled-glazed units, giving them a beautiful light-reflecting, brilliant diamond finish.

If you really want to make a statement why not get artistic and commission a stained-glass window? When it comes to design, the only limit is your imagination and we have some great case studies if you need inspiration! In the right setting stain glass windows can be a
great feature and add real personality to your home.

While we love getting creative, we also realise that in some cases nothing beats a classic design. If a standard rectangle window is all you’re after, rest assured that with CRK all glazing will be built from scratch, with the highest quality materials and workmanship.

Bi-Folding, Sliding and French Doors; making the right choice for your home.

With spring almost in the air, it’s natural to want to open up your home and embrace outdoor living.
If you’ve been considering adding Bi-Folding, Sliding or French doors to your home, now’s the time to do it; there’s still time to catch that first alfresco meal or drink of the season!
Bi-folding doors have become the go-to choice for indoor/outdoor living, but it’s worth considering all the options before you decide what’s right for your house. Bi-Folding, Sliding and French Doors all add light and a sense of space, but each have their own benefits and features. Here’s our take on each option;
Bi-Folding Doors

  • Create a contemporary look, internally AND externally
  • Allow you to replace an entire wall with glass, with an opening that stretches over 90% of the wall
  • Maximise the fresh air and natural light flow in your home
  • Maximise the view; our doors are the slimmest available
  • The only thing to bear in mind is that when the doors are closed the panes break-up the view slightly

Sliding Doors
  • Are now back in fashion
  • Allow you to replace an entire wall with glass
  • Maximise the view when the doors are closed. (Sliding doors have less panels than Bi-folds)
  • Can have multiple sliding panels; a two panel door with one or both panels sliding, a three panel door on a triple track with two doors sliding behind a fixed panel, a four panel door with panels sliding open from the centre or a four panel door on a quadruple track with doors to sliding flush behind each other.
  • On the flip side, part of the view remains behind glass at all times.

French Doors
These are very different to Bi-Folds and Sliding Doors and are a good choice when:

  • You have a traditional house and want to match traditional windows
  • You want to let in more light without losing much wall space
  • You want a lower-cost option
  • The only thing to bear in mind is that French Doors don’t open as wide as Bi-folding or Sliding Doors so the views aren’t as clear or far-reaching

With all this choice, it’s lucky we’re here to make the decision easier! Please pop into our showroom for more information & to see all of the options on display.

Whatever option you’re considering, when you choose CRK you can be confident that:
  • We design, manufacture and install all our own doors so our solutions are bespoke to your needs.
  • We offer value for money – you’ll be surprised how competitive our products work out.
  • All our work comes with a 10-year guarantee
